Heaven's Gate "cult"
Back in the 1990s there used to be a religious group called "Heaven's Gate". Their story ended in a tragedy, when 39 members killed themselves in 1997. They believed they would be taken up to the Heavens by some extraterrestrials. They thought there would be a UFO behind the comet Hale-Bopp.

Many people condemn the group as a "destructive cult". But I wonder if they could REALLY have been taken into a higher lever of existence. I mean - how can we ever know? Their faith was very strong, and that IS convincing.

However, this may not be compatible with Christianity.

I know the group's concept was not compatible with any of the three religions, because non of the believers is allowed to kill his/herself.

RE: Heaven's Gate "cult"
Just saw this and sorry 'bout bringing it back from the dead where it belongs.

http://www.therichest.com/rich-list/most...ous-cults/

A crazy man that led the extremely gullible and desperate.
Reminds one of Jim Jone's famous last words. "Drink the purple Kool-aid."

One wonders what could cause ordinary people of at least average I.Q.
to "drink the purple kool-aid" ?
Ir burn to death as in the case of the Branch Davidian types.

Kinda put a bad slant on religion what?
Would it be a more peaceful world without "God", or Allah, or any such
nonsense?
If the faithful believer would simply read and understand the Christian
Bible such stupid nonsense would not happen.
Just ponderin'.

Didn't they think earth is going to be "recycled"? This part at least was wrong.

What really is disturbing for me: they believed that some ETs were going to murder all mankind except a few, yet they felt confident to trust them.

It was never clear what it meant for the earth to be " recycled - spaded under - refurbished" but it was apparently going to be fatal for anyone who did not leave. Here is how the leader "Do" explained it all, apparently as explained to him by "Ti" before "Ti" left for the spirit world. I have no idea what happened to "Re", "Mi", "Fa", "Sol" and "La".

And here I sit so patiently waiting to find out what price

"Doe a deer a female deer, ray a drop of golden sun................................."

I'm selling tickets for the first 100 to hitch a ride on the next comet that visits earth.
I'll getcha there..........................trust me. :>)
◄ Ecclesiastes 1:4 ►
"Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever.
A generation goes and a generation comes, But the earth remains forever.
What advantage does man have in all his work Which he does under the sun? A generation goes and a generation comes, But the earth remains forever. Also, the sun rises and the sun sets; And hastening to its place it rises there again.…"

More on the web if ya likes.

The world just keeps on turning now don't it?
Wonder? For those that believe "god" will destroy the planet itself.
Why would "God" do that?
What make some believe "God" wants to destroy this planet?
Man's original commandment was to subdue the earth, make it a paradise.
That never happened.
I'd kinda like to thing that one day God will destroy Satan, wickedness and those that support
Satan.
THEN the righteous can make this place the paradise it could be.
Meanwhile I'm waiting for the comet to come back so I can catch a ride on the
thing!

If we just die instead do we get our money back?

Not if it's on one of those Space-X rockets. "Explodes on impact"

When someone asks "What would Jesus do?" remind them that flipping tables and chasing people with a whip is entirely possible.

RE: Heaven's Gate "cult"
I'll bet the Space-X explosion was EXPENSIVE!
What ever........do NOT drink the purple Kool-Aid!
I think it takes a special kind of moron to follow a Koresh or Jim Jones.
Those folks followed a man not the Bible.

Funny.Big Grin

The entire motive behind almost ALL the t-v evangelists is to MAKE MONEY
for themselves.
I've done a fair amount of public speaking and am not at all
microphone shy.
I do have a conscious and couldn't "sell "God" for any amount of money.
Especially when I knew all I was doing was "tickling the ear".
Telling people what they want to believe, not necessarily what the Bible
teaches.
What DOES the Bible teach?
One can only wonder. There are at LEAST 33,000 denominations of
Christians all believing the other denomination is wrong.
Pick one.
I can not.
I'm baptized............................sort of insurance.Big Grin
Well what if this religion crap is true?
I suppose I could find a charismatic preacher like Jim Jones and David
Koresh and drink the purple Kool-aid, or burn to death in a compound
some place.
Religious nut case to me: "Here! Drink this and go to Heaven."
Me: "Sure 'nuff. You first! Come back and tell me what heaven is like." Big Grin
Christian I am. STUPID I ain't.
33,000 denominations ALL READING THE SAME BOOK!
How does that happen?
I was raised by a God believing but totally not religious father and a J.W.
mother.
ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
Momma said:
"The end of the world is coming any day so you'd better be good."
"Jehovah's gonna get ya."
ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
Today I know better. This Jehovah is a pretty good fella methinks.
Jesus set a good example that none of us can follow.
Imperfect we are you see.
Did I mention I'm alcoholic?
Yup and it sucks.
I'm sober now of course. God + A.A. fellowship works for me.
That and 3 rehab hospitals, twice nearly dead.
Drink = die. I get that.
Why would anyone KNOWING that drinking alcohol is death go ahead
and drink the stuff anyway?
I firmly believe alcoholism is a form of deadly mental illness.
"Jehovah's gonna get ya." "Jehovah's gonna get ya." "Jehovah's gonna get ya."

Oh, I'm back now. I'm o.k. o.k. o.k. o.k. o.k. Big Grin

RE: Heaven's Gate "cult"
The word "cult" has become a term that is associated with very negative associations... I believe originally it was defined as

"a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object."

Wikipedia has:

The word "cult" was originally used not to describe a group of religionists, but for the act of worship or religious ceremony. It was first used in the early 17th century, borrowed via the French culte, from Latin cultus (worship).

"All religions, arts, and sciences are branches of the same tree."
