I need help with a bit of fiction I'm writing
Okay, so I'm getting commissioned to do some more work for the tabletop RPG Witch Hunter: The Invisible World. And I need a little help. This game takes place in an alternate 1689. What I need is an anti-Christian conspiracy, secret society, or movement from that time in medieval Europe or the American Colonies to serve as antagonists.

A historical movement is vastly preferred. Dan Brown's Illuminati from Angels & Demons doesn't count, because it's so obviously fictional. I would prefer a conspiracy, secret society, or movement that was real, or at the very least hasn't been thoroughly and completely debunked like Brown's crap.

Having a slight anti-Catholic bias is preferred for story reasons, but as long as it is anti-Christian it will serve my purposes.

This is an alternate 1689, so I can fudge some details to suit my purposes, but I want there to be at least some historical truth behind this. Can anyone help me out? Parousia? Smile

I'm back baby! Thanks for everyone who sent me PMs asking what had happened to me.

I don't know of any anti-christian conspiracies going on in 1689, but there was a lot of serious fighting going on between Catholics and Protestants around then. There was of course the Glorious Revolution of 1689 which returned England to Protestant domination. The quasi-Calvinist Huguenots were expelled from France by Catholic Louis XIV in 1685. Some of them settled in North America, including New Netherlands. One might imagine some of them getting involved in King Williams War, the first of the French-Indian wars.

I don’t know exactly what flavor of thing you are looking for. But my imagination is cooking up Huguenots turned atheist linking up with Here to fight the French Catholics who persecuted their ancestors and families. is a link connecting Huguenots with the devil in the eyes of Catholics.

Or maybe I am in too strange of a mood today.

Eh, the problem is it's an already established universe, so major groups like the Huguenots and the Iroquois are already distinctly not-evil. A smaller group might work, though.

I'm sure I'll find something. Or I'll just invent it.

You may have to invent something. There does not seem to be any anti-christian movements in that era. All the 'conspiracies' were aimed at some Christian sect by some other sect, all with specific political aims. Examples include the persecution of the Huguenots already mentioned and the Jacobites in England. (These should not be confused with the Jacobins in France a hundred years later. They might qualify but did not exist in 1689.)

Maybe I'll just mess around with the Knights Templar like everyone else who writes about conspiracies from that era. Smile

Anyway, thanks for your help.

Here is a long shot. Isaac Newton as the head of a secret heretical occult society.

Oh... now that is awesome. I don't care if this will work for what I'm working on now or not, I'm working this into the mythology somehow.
Do you know of any good books on Newton's occult and religious studies? Particularly his occult studies? I'd love to have more than just Wikipedia articles to work with.

RE: I need help with a bit of fiction I'm writing
There is a book on Newton's interest in the occult. It's a general biography but leans towards the subect of his esoteric interests. I think it's called 'Isaac Newton: The Last Sorcerer' by Michael White. I double check when I get home. It was a while ago that I read it, but I really enjoyed it.

A few years before his death Newton burnt a lot of his papers, and it's suggested that these were some of his more occult ones. You could have a field day inventing what he burnt!

And what did he burn besides the occult papers? Was there something he burned to protect a certain young girl sent to the Americas for safety? Perhaps a young girl who was the daughter of a certain woman born the same day as Newton, herself the daughter of a woman hanged as a witch with so many others on that infamous date August 27, 1845 at the hands of the notorious Matthew Hopkins. What did this woman who shared a birth date with Newton have to do with his occult studies and the secret alchemical society he headed? What became of her? And who was the father of her daughter?

I think perhaps I was a gothic novelist in another life…Big Grin
