Ramadan
I currently live in the house of a Muslim family in Indonesia and, out of solidarity, observed Ramadan with them. It very quickly resulted in me being awake at night and sleeping during the day.

Though I have certainly won the sympathy of my Indonesian friends I am unsure if my "fasting" was of any value in the eyes of God...

Solidarity with other people is more important than what some god would think imo!

Don't cling to a mistake just because you spent a lot of time making it

RE: Ramadan
As I understand it, respect for others is an important element of Islam. Showing respect for the beliefs and practices of others, as you are doing in fasting for Ramadan, would seem to be in accord with Islam and therefore not wrong.

Any Muslims care to comment?

That is correct
Also you can respect the fasting part without you fasting.

RE: Ramadan
Well, I was not the only one who slept away most of the fasting time. :-)

I don't know about the others, for me during Ramadan I slept about 3~4 hours a day. Worked full time, took care of kids after work, and prayed at night. It sounds difficult, but I wish the whole year was Ramadan
