I'll start! Smile

Marrakesh Night Market by Loreena McKennitt

"They're gathered in circles
the lamps light their faces
The crescent moon rocks in the sky
The poets of drumming
keep heartbeats suspended
The smoke swirls up and then dies

Would you like my mask?
would you like my mirror?
cries the man in the shadowing hood
You can look at yourself
you can look at each other
or you can look at the face, the face of your god

The stories are woven
and fortunes are told
The truth is measured by the weight of your gold
The magic lies scattered
on rugs on the ground
Faith is conjured in the night market's sound

Would you like my mask?
would you like my mirror?
cries the man in the shadowing hood
You can look at yourself
you can look at each other
or you can look at the face, the face of your god

The lessons are written
on parchments of paper
They're carried by horse from the river Nile
says the shadowy voice
In the firelight, the cobra
is casting the flame a winsome smile

Would you like my mask?
would you like my mirror?
cries the man in the shadowing hood
You can look at yourself
you can look at each other
or you can look at the face, the face of your god
"

This song was written after Loreena visited Marrakesh in 1993 and observed all the activity during Ramadan.

If you should see evident sins or defects, draw out of those thorns the rose; perceiving, moreover, that such apparent sinners may frequently have a good intention, for no one can judge the secrets of the heart of man.

RE: The Music Thread
I'm tempted to say "Herod's Song" from Jesus Christ Superstar just to fit in with the stereotype, but nah. My favorite song is very difficult to pin down (I'm an audiophile,) but this one fits me right about now.

Once upon a time I had tides to control
I had moons to spin
And starts to ignite
And they threw flowers at my feet
When I walked through the town

Once upon a time I had lives to protect
I had rules to change
And wrongs to set right
And there were people at my side
And there were rivers I could guide
I wanted nothing in return

Let me out of here
Give me back all my dreams
Let me out of here
Let me please see the sun
Let me out of here
At least tell me what I did wrong

I'm the king of the world
Chief of the sea
High on the wind
At least I used to be
And I'm the king of the world
Please set me free
Let me remind them of my promise
Live my given destiny

Once upon a time I had fate in my hands
And the confidence
Of a million regimes
And they said brother, you're in a charge
We'll follow anything you say

Once upon a time father said to me
Child you are everything
That you see in your dreams
And I thought "Jesus! That's the key!
There are no walls surrounding me
There are no prisons in this life"

Let me out of here
Give me back to the wind
Let me out of here
Let me please see my son
Let me out of here
Don't you understand who I am?

I'm the king of the world
Chief of the sea
High on the wind
At least I try to be
And I'm the king of the world
Watch and you'll see
I have the power and the promise
Give me back my family

Why are we punished for wanting to explore?
Why am I sitting in this cell?
I was not challenging the system
I was working for the people
I just wanted to be better

Why are we punished for wanting to survive?
Why am I locked behind these walls?
Tell the children I'll return to them
Tell them someone
Let them know I will be free

I will not be defeated
I will stand like a mountain
And the road will stretch before me
And they'll know it's time to follow
And they'll lift their eyes
And raise their heads
And face the sun
And tell the future

I'm the king of the world
Land of the free
High in the sky
The best that I can be
I'm the king of the world
Watch and you'll see
Nothing can keep me from tomorrow
Keep me from my destiny

I'm the king of the world
I'm the king of the world
I'm . . .

I'm . . .

At least I used to be . . .

Very interesting. Kind of reminds me of that recent Coldplay song.

Unfortunately, I don't listen to Coldplay all that much, so I can't remember what it was called. Big Grin

RE: The Music Thread
Ah, TOOL...so good...

Currently listening to "Vicarious" from "10,000 Days".
With a video even! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUXBCdt5IPg

Eye on the TV
Cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor
It happens to be

Like:
"Killed by the husband"
"Drowned by the ocean"
"Shot by his own son"
"She used a poison in his tea
And kissed him goodbye"
That's my kind of story.
It's no fun 'til someone dies

Don't look at me like
I am a monster
Frown out your one face
But with the other
Stare like a junkie
Into the TV
Stare like a zombie
While the mother holds up her child,
Watches him die

Hands to the sky crying,
"Why, oh why!"

Cause I need to watch things die
From a distance
Vicariously, I
Live while the whole world dies
You all need it too - don't lie.

Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit,
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'
Neither the brave nor bold
Will write as the stories told
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'

I need to watch things die
From a good safe distance
Vicariously, I
Live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same so
Why can't we

Just admit it

Blood like rain, come down
Drum on grave and ground

Part vampire
Part warrior
Carnivore and voyeur
Stare at the transmitter
Synched to the death rattle...

La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la-lie

Credulous at best your desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men
Pull your head on out
Your hippy beliefs and give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again

The universe is hostile
So impersonal
Devour to survive
So it is, so it's always been...

We all feed on tragedy
It's like blood to a vampire

Vicariously, I
Live while the whole world dies
Much better you than I.

If ignorance is bliss why aren't there more happy people?

Well, now I'm listening to "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails...I can't post the lyrics without blatantly violating the forum rules...but it's a bit happier. If you've never heard the song before, the lyrics are here:

In case it wasn't clear - PARENTAL ADVISORY: EXPLICIT LYRICS!!!

(Sorry Alison, still no raindrops or kittens.)

RE: The Music Thread
Just for you, Alison.

Funny faces
In sunny places
Being in love it feels so great
And all I need is
Two ingredients:
My buttercup
And the perfect place

Me and you
Here's what we'll do
Walk hand-in-hand
Into Lovers Land
You're the best
And I can't resist
A kiss on the lips

Don't talk
just watch the world go by
As we float away
In slow motion
So special
It's so special
You the girl I see
I am your boy to be

I'm so happy
I'm so happy
That I'm a boy and you're a girl alright
I'm so happy
I'm so happy
I'm overjoyed
We're gonna hang out tonight

I can't walk
Can't move
Because I'm paralyzed
By your love
And that's OK by me
I'm so happy
I'm so Happy
It's real great
We're lovers of loving love
Lovers of loving love

It's so hip
To give you a kiss
And taste cherry chapstick
It's our secret,
Our little secret
We'll never tell
Don't talk
just watch the world go by
As we float away
In slow motion
So special
It's so special
You the girl I see
I am your boy to be

I'm so happy
I'm so happy
That I'm a boy and you're a girl alright
I'm so happy
I'm so happy
I'm overjoyed
We're gonna hang out tonight

I can't walk
Can't move
Because I'm paralyzed
By your love
And that's OK by me
I'm so happy
I'm so happy
It's real great
We're lovers of loving love
Lovers of loving love

Lovers of loving
Love it's love
It's love
It's love
It's love
It's love
We're dreaming of

Lovers of loving
Love it's love
It's love
It's love
It's love
It's lovers of loving love

RE: The Music Thread
hey ... cool! Those are some great lyrics!

I'm either really old ... or really young ... I've never heard of teh Aquabats!! I'll have to do some googling ...

I'm an 80's Hair Band kind of girl ... with a few throwbacks to the 60's and 70's.

Mercy -- When you don't get what you deserve.
Grace -- When you get what you don't deserve.

Aquabats never really got a lot of fame. I just like that song because it's so ridiculously cheesy.
