UK's "Opt-In" internet firewall expanded
According to this report, Prime Minister Cameron's firewall plan will not be limited to pornography alone.

Quote:"ISPs will also be forced to block violent material, extremist sites, pro-anorexia and pro-suicide sites, alcohol, smoking, web forums and even esoteric material."

Now, the exclusion of esoteric material (information known well about by few,) is troubling in and of itself, and it's pointed out that Pagan groups are "up-in-arms" (rightfully so, if this is true, I feel,) but I also raise a brow at the exclusion of web forums. We have several users here from the UK, and this would affect them if it is true.

Pain, I believe you're the best voice here for clarification; is there much truth in this report?

That certainly fits in with what I've heard, yes. Fingers still crossed, however, that:

a) the coalition government are visibly struggling at the moment, and Cameron's lost a lot of influence with his own party (actually for forcing through the legalisation of Gay Marriage, pretty much the only thing he's done that I approve of), so he might not have the strength to pull it off,
b) his time as PM so far seems to be characterised by reactionary "let's ban the moon!" pronouncements designed to chase public support that vanish without trace after a bit, so it might fade away and
c) the logistics of actually making this work are almost certainly harder than he or anyone close to him realises, so hopefully they can't do it

We should be worried, and it's further evidence of the reactionary, ill-informed and publicity-chasing policy making that's currently ravaging Education and the Public Sector in general, but I don't think we should be freaking out just yet).

Yeah speaking as someone who works for an internet company, the sheer volume of data that would need to be processed in milliseconds makes this a moon-landing-level billion-dollar (whoops, sorry, billion-pound) investment, not something that can be cobbled together out of the slush fund. (well technically they could, but it would lower everyone in the uk's internet speed.) Also, he didn't mention proxy sites, which would rip a huge hole in his plan.

Count me among the up-in-arms lot.

It's like all the stupid has migrated into the PM's head.

Why would they block Esoteric cites,
I love those?

Wait Web Forums too?

I feel sorry for those people in the U.K., it's going turn into a Fascist police state at this rate if that's true.

If this happens on any real level watch ALL the tech savvy Scots vote for independence in the referendum.

The referendum's being held next year, unless I missed something gigantic.
