What are the deeds of the people of Hell?
Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah, may Allah have mercy on him, was asked: "What are the deeds of the people of Hell?"

He replied: "The deeds of the people of Hell are:
associating partners with Allah
disbelieving in His Messengers
kufr (ingratitude, disbelief)
hasad (malicious envy)
lying
treachery
oppression and wrongdoing (dhulm)
promiscuity
backstabbing
cutting off the ties of kinship
miserliness
inconsistency between what is in one’s heart and the face one shows to people
despairing of the mercy of Allah
feeling secure from the plan of Allah
panicking blindly at the time of crisis
pride and extravagance at the time of plenty
abandoning one’s duties towards Allah
transgressing His limits
violating His sanctity
fearing a created being instead of the Creator
showing off
going against the Qur’an and Sunnah in word or deed
obeying a created being in some act of disobedience to the Creator
blindly supporting falsehood
mocking the Signs of Allah
rejecting the truth
withholding knowledge and testimony that should be revealed
witchcraft and magic
disobeying one’s parents
killing any soul forbidden by Allah except for reasons of justice
consuming the wealth of the orphan
riba (usury)
desertion from the battlefield
slandering the reputation of innocent, chaste, believing women." [Yaqadhat uli al-I`tibar, p. 222]

One of the items on the list is "showing off". If people do that, do they go to hell?

If so, that seems a very harsh punishment for a minor offense.

i think the prophet of Allah (Jesus) forbided one to show off and arrogance...and one feel he is better others...Allah only knows who is better...and the prophet of Allah (Mohamed) said: " O son of Adam, u all r from Adam and Adam is from dust"...

I agree about heaven and hell. God says:

There is no hell.
There is no punishment.

There is no heaven.
There is no reward.

There are only lessons
To be learned.

You are my student.
I am your teacher.

You live in darkness.
I bring you light.

If there is no eternal consequence for what we do, then why listen to God at all?

We have a moral sense and can choose to be moral beings. If I doing something just for the reward or because I will be punished for not doing it, I am not making a moral choice.

You didn't answer my question. If there is no eternal consequence for what we do, then why listen to God at all?

I disagree with your second statement. If God rewards me for making a good moral choice it's no different than a father rewarding a son for doing the work assigned to him. The moral choice I make isn't for God's good but for mine. I make the moral choice not under the motivation of reward or the fear of punishment. I make the moral choice in order to please the one I love and Who loves me-God. If I avoid the immoral choice out of fear of punishment that's not immoral. It's misguided but not immoral. One should fear offending God more than the punishment one would endure by making immoral choices. Above all God's mercy does not negate God's justice.

Human freedom means that we are the fathers/mothers of our actions. I believe that man does have an eternal destiny and that we are eternally responsable for our acts. But I also believe that God is a God who radically loves us. And as long as we continue to try and love as He loves we will fulfill the moral law that He wrote into our hearts.

I am *so* screwed...

Oh well...equally as screwed if Christianity is the "right" religion...Hinduism too...

Actually, if anything other than Buddhism is "right" I'm in trouble...

Sad

If ignorance is bliss why aren't there more happy people?
