Would you sever your hand?

Would you sever your hand?
Or your foot, or pluck out your one eye?
If they troubled you;
if they led you to sin against Jesus’ ethical code;
as he instructed his followers.
Jesus told you to do it.
Do you know of anybody in TWO THOUSAND YEARS of Jesus’ religion that has done that?
Why was this instruction never obeyed?
Sure, most violations of Jesus' code were done by those members of the body of his followers!
Sure, we would see a lot of the faithful mutilated!
So, why not follow Jesus' instruction, I ask?
Not one case in 2000 years?!...

More bakeries less churches; more baking powder less religion.

No courage to venture a comment on this topic?
OK, then.
But it is an interesting passage of the gospels, nonetheless.

To me it's more symbolic rather than the actual deed itself. Think about it, your mind controls what your body does. Your hand or foot doesnt make up it's own mind. So if you take it literally then you would severe your own head as it's your brain that controls everything.

To me it's more cutting off what causes you to sin. This could be influences in your life etc etc.

Good thought.
I also believe like that; that it is allegorical.
However, the pope's agents [priests] tell me the reference to hell or heaven in the passage is not symbolic or allegorical, but real!
Ah, the crooks!
For their self interests and COMMERCE with superstition, from which they accrue a parasitic lifestyle deceiving the naive!
[Remember the pope's pedophiles in vogue these days?
What would they have to chop off?!]

I actually knew a person who did -- she died from blood loss, because she did it herself.

I however, wouldn't like to see anyone mutilated.

Luckily my gods don't ask for self-mutilation.

Your gods, yes!
You can have a dozen, for what I care.
What is important here is to remember the story is absurd from beginning to end.
Jesus had the awful habit of messing up his teachings.
The pope arrives here, nevertheless, to insist the chopping off of a limb is a no-no, because it is supposed to be allegorical, and he is right.
But then he also messes up his beliefs by "legislating" that HELL & HEAVEN are literal in the fable!!!
Oh!...?...
...
Religion is half allegorical half insane.

I never counted all the pantheon, I only actively worship three on a regular basis. But sure, there are dozens.

Oh!...?...

Which is why they're his beliefs and not yours.

You keep saying "religion" when you mean "Christianity."

Yes, I know, but he keeps saying "religion" when he means Christianity or Catholicism, and someone has to point it out.

RE: Would you sever your hand?
You're right.
I mean Jesus' & the pope's religion and its ugly derivatives; but why not include ALL the other major and minor religions?
All of them have somewhere embedded disfiguring idiosyncrasies ugly enough to make a clown cry.
Be intelligent not to allow anybody to switch off your brain to replace it with another.
It is the biggest robbery in the universe: some deluded fanatic demanding that you replace your brain with his!
...
Religion is one brain by the power of another.
